From the case of MGM v. Grokster mentioned this week, we know more about the copyright liability for p2p networks to take as the third party of it. However, it seems there will be more chances for cooperation between the copyright holders and p2p networks. In Taiwan, my home country, the situation is similar. In 2002, the copyright holders sued two p2p networks named respectively EzPeer and Kuro for infringement. In the EzPeer case, the Shihlin District Court in Taipei found it's not guilty of infringing copyright law. Conversely, the Taipei District Court sentenced three Kuro's executives and a user to prison. The whole different results has made the media industry confused. The reason is the court thought EzPeer has alternative good functions, but Kuro only promoted itself completely by uploading copyrighted media files. It's kind of like the summary judgement made in U.S. before the Supreme Court declared the opinions of the MGM v. Grokster. However, in 2006, EzPeer and Kuro successively settled out of court with the plaintiff, so the two cases couldn't be considered again by the Court of appeals in Taiwan. After the reconciliation, most of the copyright holders even chose to cooperate with EzPeer, making the music uploaded online legally. EzPeer thus became the first legal website for users to share music online. Also, earlier in 2005, the same mold of cooperation appeared in U.S. Several record companies provided music files to Peer Impact, and allowed it as a platform for users to share files. To me, it's a good start for both copyright holders and p2p networks. In this era of the Internet, it's much harder to prevent users from sharing information and files online. Even if p2p networks are sued constantly, new ones still emerge in a few months. I think copyright holders totally understand the situation, and that's why they started to sell part of the copyright to specific p2p network. It's mutually beneficial to users, p2p networks and copyright holders, and I believe this will be a future trend of the the future.

Before the first class of GRA617, I did not know exactly what I would learn from this course. After the last lecture in watching "Helvetica", I feel that I really have some different points and thoughts. First, I acquire a lot of confidence from different projects. Actually, I never thought that I was a talented person of design, and I have thought that I was a person who lack for creativity. However, in these 6 weeks, I found that I could finish a poster, logo and even website. Although my works are still not so complete, but they really give me some enlightenment that I can design as long as I try. Second, I really learn some useful software for mass communication industry. I tried to learn some skills of Photoshop in Taiwan, but I couldn't get familiar with it because I never apply it in real projects. Here, I could keep practicing Adobe Photoshop, InDesign and Illustrator through all projects, and it's really helpful. Finally, I really learned a lot from professors, TAs and classmates. As an international student who has just been here for 2 months, I admitted that sometimes I felt confused about the instruction in tools and functions. I really appreciated my classmates' help. Besides, I also thank Greg and Koren for discussing and sharing opinions with me in all projects. Both of you inspired my designs a lot! I really had a good time here, and I'm sure that I would do more designs in my future magazine editing and ICC courses!

I think that a lot of people have the same work as me this week from the profile project of the news writing class. When I found some information through the website, I found a special column in Syracuse.com, named Finding Orion. It is a column talking about a the National Guard 27th Infantry Brigade in Afghanistan. I feel this topic is profund and interesting, and it's also surprising that this column is put in local pages. In my home country, Taiwan, you barely saw this kind of columns. Besides, I also found that the logo of it is really special. It is combined by three letters, and I think it's a simple and precise logo as well. The column not only collects a lot of elements of military lives, but also the lives and conditions of the soldiers' families. I think it is really worth for us to care. Last night, I watched a basketball game, Team U.S.A. versus Team Canada. The game is a warmup match for the coming Olympic games. Undoubtedly, NIKE is one of the ad's sponsers of the game. After the game, I surfed Nike.com and found a special zone about the U.S.A. basketball team, including an impressive logo and slogan. http://www.nike.com/nikeos/p/nikebasketball/en_US/athletes/usab_hub I feel the logo is really a good one. The slogan "This is our game" really makes me feel enthusiastic, and the design of the logo and the basketball matches up nicely. The typeface is strong, and the gradient of the color increases the abundance of the logo. Besides, I also found that there is a gallery of the team U.S.A. in the website, including the profiles of some players who wore the nike shoes. In another page, Nike also has another area for other countries' NBA players. I think this website could have some effectiveness in promoting the basketball in Olympics and the players as well. The movie to be fashionable this weekend is definitely "The Dark Knight." Everybody talks about it, and it also earned an estimated $18.5 million in gross revenue at its 12 a.m. opening screenings early Friday morning at 3,040 screens, the most ever for midnight shows. http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2008/07/17/movies/thedarkknight/index.html On The New York Times's website listed above, I found something special about "The Dark Knight." It is a soundslide show about the movie, and displays some special photos. I think that the director Christopher Nolan really did a good job in this movie, and the Batman is really back again! After reading Lupton's "Grid" Chapter,I realize that grid systems actually exist in almost all books, magazines, newspapers and websites.Grid systems make reading much easier and more comfortable, and they increase readers' inclination to keep reading. Take me for example, other than the New York Times, I often visit the website of the Washington Post. I feel that the Washington Post's layout is shipshape and readable. The whole website is seperated from three parts. The left part is about some topic pictures and features, and the middle part is the headlines. The right part is the Ads, and some sharing promotion plans. I think this kind of grid system is great, because people always read from left to right, and readers' eyes always focus on the middle part. Therefore, putting the main topic and pictures on the middle and the left is a good idea to me. Besides, when you enter in a specific report, the website is still separated from three parts. The left part is the main report, and the middle one is the photos. The right part is still for Ads. I think this kind of grid system still corresponds with the readability. The grid systems' world is so necessary that almost every news website has their own system, and I feel that a successful grid layout is really a key reason for the publication's success.

To me, I feel that a good website is not only a stadium to convey messages rapidly and correctly, but also a place people would like to surf it a lot. I think the offical site of Major Baseball League is one of this kind, because it offers people every game's live online instantly, and many baseball fans really feel convenient and friendly about it. I think current design of this kind of wabsites enhances the user experience undoubtly. Take MLB.com for example, people without television and radio to enjoy the games still have another choice, only if they could connect to the Internet. The live gane online provides not merely all players' data but also every strike or ball, play-by-play. Fans who had been lost the opportunity to watch the games have another new experience online. I think it's the value of the website's design-increasing new viewpoints, solutions and experiences! (July 10, 2008, Posted on Visual Communication Theory & Practice Section 6 Blog)

Typography is inside everyone’s life, and that is why a graphic designer has to explore it and learn how to use it well. However, I think the typography is so widespread because it does not have general consistence. In every work, some people love it, but others might hate it. It is difficult to let everyone love it. Therefore, I think that combining various fonts is helpful to increase some new creations. For example, I really love the design of the “Walt Disney World.” The logo’s font really makes me feel a magical world, and the castle’s design really matches the concept of the Walt Disney World. Besides, the logo’s colors could be different to harmony with every character of the animations. To me, it is wonderful design of the logo, because it touches your hearts to link with its concepts. I feel that is the spirit of typography exactly. (July 6, 2008, Posted on Visual Communication Theory & Practice Section 6 Blog)

Why is CPBL always so powerless?! It's really a useless league, no matter for the protection to the good players or the punishment to the bad players. The funniest thing is, I kind of don't care about this fake league.
